Do US Citizens Need A Visa For Indonesia? Beyond Bali (2026)

Yes, US citizens need a visa for Indonesia, whether they are heading to Bali, Jakarta, Lombok, Komodo or anywhere else in the archipelago. For most short trips, the visa on arrival makes it easy.

This guide covers the visa options for Americans, what changes if you travel beyond Bali, and what to have ready when you land.

Do Americans Need A Visa For Indonesia?

Yes. The United States is not on Indonesia’s visa-free list, but it is on the list of countries eligible for a visa on arrival (VOA). You can apply for the electronic version, the e-VOA, online before you fly.

Indonesia Visa Options For US Citizens

Visa Stay Best for
e-VOA / VOA 30 days, extendable once to 60 Most holidays
C1 single-entry visit visa Longer initial stay, extendable Trips of two months or more
Remote worker (E33G) 1 year Remote employees of foreign companies

See our guides to the Indonesia digital nomad visa and KITAS for longer stays.

The e-VOA For Americans

  • Cost: IDR 500,000, roughly US$30 to US$35
  • Where: evisa.imigrasi.go.id, the only official portal
  • Stay: 30 days, single entry, extendable once for 30 more. See our visa extension guide.
  • When: apply online before travel; e-VOAs can be issued well ahead of departure

You can also buy a VOA on arrival at major international airports, though e-VOA holders skip the visa payment queue.

Traveling Beyond Bali

  • Jakarta and other gateways: the same e-VOA applies when you arrive at Indonesia’s main international airports.
  • Bali’s tourist levy of IDR 150,000 applies only to Bali. See the Bali levy explained.
  • Domestic flights to Lombok, Labuan Bajo (Komodo), Yogyakarta and elsewhere do not need another visa once you are in Indonesia.
  • Arriving by sea or at smaller ports: confirm in advance that the port issues visas on arrival; otherwise get an e-VOA or other visa first.

Other Entry Requirements

  • Passport valid at least six months from arrival, with blank pages
  • All Indonesia arrival card, a free digital declaration. See our All Indonesia guide.
  • Return or onward ticket out of Indonesia, which airlines and immigration may check. See proof of onward travel for Indonesia.

Arriving In Indonesia: Step By Step

  1. Apply for your e-VOA online and save the PDF.
  2. Within the days before arrival, complete the All Indonesia arrival card.
  3. If landing in Bali, pay the tourist levy online.
