Bali Visa For US Citizens: e-VOA, Tourist Levy And Arrival Card (2026)

Bali is one of the easiest places in Asia for Americans to visit, but it is not visa-free. US citizens need a visa on arrival, a separate Bali tourist levy, and a free digital arrival declaration. Airlines may also ask for proof that you will leave Indonesia.

This guide breaks down each requirement, what it costs, and how to sort everything out before you board.

Do US Citizens Need A Visa For Bali?

Yes. Bali is part of Indonesia, and US citizens need a visa to enter. For tourism, the simplest option is the Visa on Arrival (VOA), which you can either buy at the airport or apply for online in advance as an e-VOA.

Bali Entry Requirements At A Glance

Requirement Cost Where
e-VOA or Visa on Arrival IDR 500,000 (around US$30 to $35) evisa.imigrasi.go.id, or at the airport
Bali tourist levy IDR 150,000 (around US$9 to $10) Love Bali portal, or on arrival
All Indonesia arrival card Free allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id
Passport – Valid at least 6 months from arrival
Return or onward ticket – May be checked by airline and immigration

The e-VOA vs Visa On Arrival

Both cost IDR 500,000 and give you a single-entry stay of 30 days, which can be extended once for another 30 days, for a maximum of 60.

  • e-VOA: apply on Indonesia’s official immigration site, evisa.imigrasi.go.id, before you fly. Pay by card, receive the visa by email, and skip the visa payment line at the airport. Apply at least a couple of days ahead.
  • Visa on Arrival: buy it at the counter when you land at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport. It works, but queues can be long when several international flights arrive together.

The e-VOA is the better choice for most travelers. Use the official site only; lookalike sites charge extra.

The Bali Tourist Levy

Since February 2024, every international visitor to Bali pays a one-time tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person. It is separate from your visa and applies regardless of visa type. Pay it online in advance through the official Love Bali portal (lovebali.baliprov.go.id) or app, and keep the QR code. You can also pay on arrival, but paying ahead is faster.

The All Indonesia Arrival Card

Indonesia has moved its arrival and customs declarations online through the free All Indonesia system. Complete it within 72 hours before arrival and save the QR code to show on landing. Our All Indonesia Arrival Card guide walks through it step by step.

Do You Need A Return Ticket To Bali?

Indonesia’s visa on arrival is granted for a short tourist stay, and travelers are expected to show that they will leave. In practice:

  • Airlines flying to Indonesia may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in, especially if you are on a one-way fare.
  • Immigration officers can ask how you plan to leave.

If you are traveling one-way or your plans are open, read our guides on onward tickets for Bali and proof of onward travel for Indonesia.

Step By Step: Before Your Bali Trip

  1. Check your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and has blank pages.
  2. Apply for your e-VOA on evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
  3. Pay the Bali tourist levy on the Love Bali portal.
  4. Book your return or onward travel, and keep the confirmation on your phone.
  5. Within 72 hours before landing, complete the All Indonesia arrival card.
  6. Save every QR code and confirmation in one folder on your phone.

Extending Your Stay

You can extend a VOA or e-VOA once, for another 30 days, by applying online before your first 30 days end. The extension costs the same as the original visa. If you want to stay longer than 60 days, look at Indonesia’s other visit visas before you travel. Remote workers may also be interested in our guide to where to stay in Bali as a digital nomad.
