Sungai Kolok to Rantau Panjang Border Crossing: 2026 Guide

Sungai Kolok in Narathiwat province faces Rantau Panjang in the Malaysian state of Kelantan, across the narrow Golok River. It is an official crossing and it is open, but it sits in Thailand’s Deep South, where security is a serious consideration. For most visa runners there are better choices.

Quick Facts

  • Thai side: Sungai Kolok (Su-ngai Kolok), Narathiwat
  • Malaysian side: Rantau Panjang, Kelantan
  • Hours: 05:00 to 21:00 Thai time (06:00 to 22:00 Malaysia time), since March 15, 2026
  • Before you go: Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)

Security Situation

The Deep South provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani have a long-running insurgency. In August 2026, explosions in Sungai Kolok led security forces to close roads to the border complex for a time, and Malaysia’s foreign ministry told its citizens to exercise heightened caution. Several Western governments advise against all but essential travel to these provinces, which can affect your travel insurance.

Only use the official crossing at the Rantau Panjang complex. Unofficial river crossings are illegal and Malaysian police have been arresting people who use them.

How The Crossing Works

  1. Clear Thai exit immigration at the Sungai Kolok checkpoint
  2. Cross the bridge to the Rantau Panjang complex
  3. Show your passport and MDAC, and get stamped into Malaysia
  4. Continue to Kota Bharu, about 45 minutes away

Safer Alternatives

  • Sadao to Bukit Kayu Hitam, the main road crossing from Hat Yai
  • Padang Besar, the rail crossing with immigration in the station
  • Flying out and back, which does not use one of your land entries

Thailand’s Border Run Rules Since September 2026

Thailand changed the rules on September 15, 2026, and they matter more than any detail of the crossing itself:

  • 30 days visa-free for eligible nationalities, for tourism only
  • Two land-border entries per calendar year on the visa exemption. Nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore are exempt from the cap
  • Air entries are not capped, but officers screen repeat visa runners more closely
  • One 30-day extension at a Thai immigration office (form TM.7, 1,900 THB)

If you have already used your two land entries this year, this crossing will not get you back in visa-free. Fly in instead, or apply for a Tourist e-Visa or the DTV before you go. Our Thailand border run rules for 2026 covers every option.

Bring Proof Of Onward Travel

Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one. See whether Malaysia asks for proof of onward travel.

If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.

FAQs

Is the Sungai Kolok border open?

Yes, at the hours above, but it can close at short notice during security incidents.

Is it safe for a visa run?

We would not choose it. Western crossings further west are easier and carry fewer advisories.

Can I take the train to Sungai Kolok?

Yes, trains run from Hat Yai, but they pass through the same advisory areas.

The Bottom Line

Sungai Kolok works, but the risk-to-reward ratio is poor. Use Sadao or Padang Besar unless you have a specific reason to be in Kelantan.
