Padang Besar Border Crossing: Thailand to Malaysia Visa Run 2026

Padang Besar is the rail crossing between Thailand and Malaysia. Thai and Malaysian immigration share the station building, so you can clear both countries without leaving the platform area. It is a popular visa run from Hat Yai and the natural route if you are heading on to Penang or Kuala Lumpur by train.

Quick Facts

  • Thai side: Padang Besar, Songkhla province
  • Malaysian side: Padang Besar, Perlis
  • Time needed: about 1 to 2 hours for the crossing
  • Minivan from Hat Yai: about 80 to 120 THB
  • Before you go: Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)

Getting There

By train: Thai trains run from Hat Yai to Padang Besar. On the Malaysian side, KTM ETS and Komuter trains connect Padang Besar with Butterworth (for Penang) and Kuala Lumpur.

By road: Minivans from Hat Yai drop you at the road checkpoint in Padang Besar town.

Crossing Step By Step

  1. At the station, clear Thai exit immigration
  2. Walk a short distance to Malaysian immigration in the same building and get stamped in
  3. Board your onward Malaysian train, or wait and re-enter Thailand

If you plan a same-day return, check train times in both directions first. Missing the last connection can leave you stuck overnight.

Malaysia Entry

Complete the MDAC within three days before arrival. Most Western passports receive 90 days visa-free.

Thailand’s Border Run Rules Since September 2026

Thailand changed the rules on September 15, 2026, and they matter more than any detail of the crossing itself:

  • 30 days visa-free for eligible nationalities, for tourism only
  • Two land-border entries per calendar year on the visa exemption. Nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore are exempt from the cap
  • Air entries are not capped, but officers screen repeat visa runners more closely
  • One 30-day extension at a Thai immigration office (form TM.7, 1,900 THB)

If you have already used your two land entries this year, this crossing will not get you back in visa-free. Fly in instead, or apply for a Tourist e-Visa or the DTV before you go. Our Thailand border run rules for 2026 covers every option.

Bring Proof Of Onward Travel

Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one. See whether Malaysia asks for proof of onward travel.

If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.

FAQs

Is Padang Besar better than Sadao?

It is better if you are traveling by train. Sadao is the main road crossing and has longer hours.

Can I buy a train ticket at the border?

Sometimes, but trains to Kuala Lumpur often sell out. Book ahead online.

Do I need a return ticket to enter Malaysia?

It is not always checked at land borders, but having one avoids problems.

The Bottom Line

Padang Besar is the most comfortable way to cross from southern Thailand into Malaysia. Plan around the train timetable and your Thai land-entry count.
