Mexicali to Calexico Border Crossing: 2026 Guide
Calexico, California and Mexicali, the capital of Baja California, are joined by two ports of entry. It is a quieter alternative to Tijuana for people heading to San Felipe or the Baja interior, and another place long-stay visitors use to leave and re-enter Mexico.
The Two Crossings
- Calexico West (downtown): pedestrians and cars, straight into central Mexicali
- Calexico East: a few miles east, with more vehicle capacity
Since March 2025, US I-94 applications at Calexico start at the pedestrian gate on the Mexican side, so plan for that if you are not a US citizen.
Getting Your FMM
Walking or driving south, you are rarely stopped, but you still need an FMM if you go beyond the border area or stay more than a few days. Stop at the INM office at the crossing, present your passport and online FMM if you have one, pay if staying more than seven days, and get it stamped.
Mexico’s FMM And How Many Days You Get
Every visitor entering Mexico needs an FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple). By land, it is free if you stay seven days or less. For longer stays the 2026 fee is 983 MXN, roughly US$55. You can fill in the FMM online before you arrive, but it still has to be stamped by an immigration officer at the border. See our Mexico tourist card guide.
The FMM allows up to 180 days, and the officer decides the number. In 2025 and 2026 travelers have reported receiving far fewer days, sometimes 30 or less, especially when their passport shows a pattern of visa runs. Ask politely for the days you need, have a hotel booking and proof of funds ready, and show when you plan to leave.
Using Mexicali For A Visa Run
- Exit Mexico through INM so your departure is recorded
- Enter the US with your passport and any entry authorization you need
- Return to Mexico and request a new FMM for the days you need
Non-US citizens need valid US entry permission. Mexican officers increasingly question frequent runs and may give fewer days.
Bring Proof Of Onward Travel
Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one. See whether Mexico asks for proof of onward travel.
If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.
FAQs
Is Mexicali faster than Tijuana?
Usually, especially on foot. See our Tijuana and San Ysidro guide for the alternative.
Is it hot?
Very. Summer temperatures often pass 110°F, so carry water in the queue.
Do I need a car permit for Baja?
Not within the Baja California peninsula.
The Bottom Line
Mexicali is a straightforward crossing. Get your FMM stamped, cross early in the day, and bring proof that you will leave Mexico on time.
