Tijuana San Ysidro Border Crossing: Mexico Visa Run Guide 2026
San Ysidro, between San Diego and Tijuana, is the busiest land border in the Western Hemisphere. For people living in Mexico, it is also a common way to leave and come back with a new FMM. And for anyone driving or walking into Baja, it is where you need to get your tourist permit right.
Quick Facts
- US side: San Ysidro, San Diego
- Mexico side: El Chaparral (PedWest) and the main Tijuana port
- FMM: required for all visitors, even in Tijuana; free by land for 7 days or less, 983 MXN for longer
- Alternative: Otay Mesa crossing and the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) bridge to Tijuana airport
Walking Into Mexico
Mexico does not routinely stop people walking in, which is why so many travelers end up without a valid FMM. Do not skip it. Go to the INM immigration office at the crossing, fill in or show your online FMM, pay if staying more than seven days, and get it stamped. Without a stamped FMM you have no legal status in Mexico, and you can have problems when you leave by air.
Using Tijuana For A Mexico Visa Run
- Leave Mexico through the Mexican exit process and hand in or close your FMM
- Enter the US with your passport and any visa or entry authorization you need
- Re-enter Mexico, get a new FMM stamped, and ask for the days you need
Non-US citizens need valid US entry permission to do this. Without it, Tijuana is not a visa run option.
Mexican officers are increasingly skeptical of back-to-back runs. Many long-stay visitors report getting fewer than 180 days, so spend some real time in the US and bring evidence of your plans.
Mexico’s FMM And How Many Days You Get
Every visitor entering Mexico needs an FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple). By land, it is free if you stay seven days or less. For longer stays the 2026 fee is 983 MXN, roughly US$55. You can fill in the FMM online before you arrive, but it still has to be stamped by an immigration officer at the border. See our Mexico tourist card guide.
The FMM allows up to 180 days, and the officer decides the number. In 2025 and 2026 travelers have reported receiving far fewer days, sometimes 30 or less, especially when their passport shows a pattern of visa runs. Ask politely for the days you need, have a hotel booking and proof of funds ready, and show when you plan to leave.
Coming Back Into The US
Expect long lines at San Ysidro, often one to three hours on foot and longer by car. SENTRI and Ready Lanes speed things up. Carry your passport or passport card; US citizens cannot enter with a driver’s license alone.
Bring Proof Of Onward Travel
Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one. See whether Mexico asks for proof of onward travel.
If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.
FAQs
Do I need an FMM just to visit Tijuana for a day?
Yes, technically everyone needs one. It is free for stays of seven days or less by land.
Can I get 180 days at Tijuana?
Possibly, but it is not guaranteed. The officer decides.
Is CBX a border crossing?
Yes, but only for passengers flying in or out of Tijuana airport.
The Bottom Line
San Ysidro is easy to cross and easy to get wrong. Always get your FMM stamped, do not overuse it as a reset, and travel with proof of your next departure.
