Desaguadero Border Crossing: Peru to Bolivia 2026 Guide
Desaguadero is the main highway crossing between Peru and Bolivia, at the southern tip of Lake Titicaca. The town is split between the two countries by the Desaguadero River. It is the most direct route from Puno to La Paz, used by freight, overnight buses and local traffic.
Quick Facts
- Location: on the Puno to La Paz highway, south of Lake Titicaca
- Controls: a binational center (CEBAF) handles both countries’ checks
- Puno to La Paz: roughly 6 to 7 hours via Desaguadero
- Character: busy, industrial and queue-heavy
Desaguadero vs Kasani
Desaguadero is faster on paper and suits overnight or direct buses to La Paz. Kasani, near Copacabana, is calmer and more scenic, and it is the crossing most tourist services use. If you are not in a hurry, Kasani is the easier day.
Bolivia Entry In 2026
Bolivia has moved US citizens into its visa-exempt group, allowing tourist stays of up to 90 days in a 12-month period without the old visa fee. Some guides still list the former visa requirement, so confirm with a Bolivian consulate or the US State Department before you go. All visitors must also complete Bolivia’s free SIGEMIG online pre-registration before arrival. Most Western passports get up to 90 days.
Peru on the way back: officers can give up to 183 days, but that is also the maximum per 365 days, so a border run cannot stretch your Peru time beyond it.
Crossing Step By Step
- Get off the bus at the border and clear Peruvian exit control
- Walk across the bridge into Bolivian Desaguadero
- Clear Bolivian entry with your passport and SIGEMIG registration
- Rejoin your bus or take a minibus on to La Paz
Keep your passport and bags close in the crowds, and carry small bills. If anyone asks for a fee, ask for an official receipt.
Bring Proof Of Onward Travel
Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one.
If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.

The Bottom Line
Desaguadero is the quick route to La Paz, not the pleasant one. Have your SIGEMIG done, cash ready and patience in reserve.
