Kasani to Yunguyo Border Crossing: Puno to Copacabana 2026
The Kasani (Bolivia) to Yunguyo (Peru) crossing on the shore of Lake Titicaca is the tourist route between Puno and Copacabana, and on to La Paz. It is smaller, calmer and more scenic than Desaguadero, and it is the one most tourist buses use.
Quick Facts
- Peru side: Yunguyo, roughly 07:30 to 18:00 (Peru time)
- Bolivia side: Kasani, roughly 08:30 to 19:00 (Bolivia time, one hour ahead)
- Puno to Copacabana: about 3 to 4 hours
- Copacabana to La Paz: about 3 to 4 hours, including the Tiquina strait ferry
Bolivia Entry In 2026
Bolivia has moved US citizens into its visa-exempt group, allowing tourist stays of up to 90 days in a 12-month period without the old visa fee. Some guides still list the former visa requirement, so confirm with a Bolivian consulate or the US State Department before you go. All visitors must also complete Bolivia’s free SIGEMIG online pre-registration before arrival. Most Western passports get up to 90 days.
Peru on the way back: officers can give up to 183 days, but that is also the maximum per 365 days, so a border run cannot stretch your Peru time beyond it.
Crossing Step By Step
- Get your Peruvian exit stamp at Yunguyo
- Walk a few hundred meters to Bolivian immigration at Kasani
- Show your passport and SIGEMIG registration and get stamped in
- Continue to Copacabana, about 15 minutes away
There are no ATMs at either post. Carry small bills in soles, bolivianos or US dollars.
Getting There
Tourist buses from Puno to Copacabana and La Paz include help at the border. Public buses and colectivos also run from Puno to Yunguyo. Cross early: hours can change without notice and Copacabana is better reached in daylight.
Bring Proof Of Onward Travel
Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one.
If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.
FAQs
Kasani or Desaguadero?
Kasani for Copacabana and Isla del Sol. Desaguadero for the direct route to La Paz.
Do US citizens still need a Bolivian visa?
Bolivia has dropped the tourist visa for US citizens, but confirm before you travel since sources still disagree.
Can I do a same-day return?
Yes, within the posts’ hours, but Copacabana deserves at least a night.
The Bottom Line
Kasani is the friendliest Peru-Bolivia crossing. Pre-register on SIGEMIG, carry cash, and cross in the morning.
