Tecún Umán to Ciudad Hidalgo Border Crossing: 2026 Guide

Tecún Umán, on Guatemala’s Pacific side, faces Ciudad Hidalgo in Chiapas across the Suchiate River. It is the gateway to Tapachula and the fastest crossing between the Guatemalan coast and southern Mexico. It is also a busy, gritty border town with significant security warnings.

Quick Facts

  • Guatemala side: Tecún Umán, San Marcos department
  • Mexico side: Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas. Mexican immigration sits at the Rodolfo Robles international bridge
  • Fees: no Guatemalan exit fee; Mexico FMM free for land stays of 7 days or less
  • Nearest city: Tapachula, about 39 km from the border

Getting There

From Guatemala City or Quetzaltenango, buses run to Tecún Umán via Coatepeque. Some shuttles go all the way to Tapachula. Once in Mexico, colectivos and buses connect Ciudad Hidalgo with Tapachula, which has an airport and ADO buses to the rest of Mexico.

Crossing Step By Step

  1. Get stamped out of Guatemala at Tecún Umán
  2. Cross the bridge on foot or by bicycle taxi
  3. Get your FMM stamped at Mexican immigration. You can pre-fill the FMM online
  4. Pay the FMM fee if you plan to stay more than seven days

Ignore the rafts crossing the river below the bridge. They bypass immigration entirely and will leave you in Mexico without a legal entry.

Security

The UK advises against all but essential travel within 40 km of the Guatemala border in southern Chiapas, which includes Ciudad Hidalgo and Tapachula. Organized crime groups are active in the area, although they do not usually target tourists. Cross in daylight and do not linger at the border. Many travelers prefer La Mesilla for this reason.

Mexico’s FMM And How Many Days You Get

Every visitor entering Mexico needs an FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple). By land, it is free if you stay seven days or less. For longer stays the 2026 fee is 983 MXN, roughly US$55. You can fill in the FMM online before you arrive, but it still has to be stamped by an immigration officer at the border. See our Mexico tourist card guide.

The FMM allows up to 180 days, and the officer decides the number. In 2025 and 2026 travelers have reported receiving far fewer days, sometimes 30 or less, especially when their passport shows a pattern of visa runs. Ask politely for the days you need, have a hotel booking and proof of funds ready, and show when you plan to leave.

The CA-4 Rule For Guatemala

Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua share one 90-day tourist allowance under the CA-4 agreement. Moving between those four countries does not reset the clock. To get a fresh 90 days you need to leave the CA-4 area entirely, which in practice means Mexico, Belize or Costa Rica. Officers decide how many days to give you on re-entry, and frequent runs can lead to fewer.

Bring Proof Of Onward Travel

Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one. See whether Mexico asks for proof of onward travel.

If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.

FAQs

The Bottom Line

Tecún Umán is quick but rough. Cross in daylight, use the bridge, and arrive in Mexico with your FMM and onward plans ready.
