Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC): How To Complete It Online

Flight attendants on the way to Taipei no longer hand out paper landing cards. Since October 1, 2025, travelers entering Taiwan must complete the online Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) before they reach immigration. It is free, quick, and easy to forget if nobody tells you about it.

This guide covers who needs the TWAC, when to submit it, how to fill it in, and what else US citizens need to enter Taiwan visa-free.

What Is The Taiwan Arrival Card?

The TWAC is an online form run by Taiwan’s National Immigration Agency (NIA). It collects your personal details, travel itinerary and accommodation in Taiwan. It replaced the paper arrival card on October 1, 2025, and completing it is mandatory before immigration clearance.

It is free of charge and it is not a visa.

Who Needs To Complete It?

  • Foreign nationals entering Taiwan visa-free, including US citizens
  • Foreign nationals entering on a visitor visa
  • Other travelers who previously had to complete a paper landing card

Who does not: registered residents of Taiwan (including alien and permanent residents) and certain diplomatic ID holders. Transit passengers who stay in the airport’s transit area and do not pass through immigration also do not need one.

When To Submit The TWAC

The NIA’s original announcement asked foreign travelers to submit the form within three days before arrival. Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs visa-exemption page now refers to completing it within seven days before arrival. To stay safely inside both windows, submit it in the three days before your flight lands.

Where To Submit It

Use the official website: twac.immigration.gov.tw. QR codes linking to the form are also posted at airports and seaports. Avoid any site that charges for it.

What You Will Need

  • Passport details: name, number, nationality, date of birth
  • Arrival date and flight or ship number
  • Purpose of visit
  • Address in Taiwan, such as your hotel
  • Contact details

How To Fill In The Taiwan Arrival Card

  1. Open twac.immigration.gov.tw shortly before your trip.
  2. Select the option to submit a new arrival card.
  3. Enter your passport details exactly as printed.
  4. Add your flight and arrival date.
  5. Enter your purpose of visit and where you will stay.
  6. Submit and save the confirmation email.

You do not usually need to show the confirmation at immigration; officers can retrieve your data by scanning your passport. If your plans change, you can review and edit your submission online using your arrival card number and passport details.

Do US Citizens Need A Visa For Taiwan?

No, for short visits. US passport holders can enter Taiwan visa-free for up to 90 days. According to Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, visa-exempt visitors should have:

  • A passport valid for the intended period of stay (US passport holders get this concession; most other nationalities need six months)
  • A confirmed return or onward air or sea ticket, or a ticket and visa for the next destination
  • No criminal record (otherwise apply for a visa in advance)
  • A completed TWAC

Stays beyond 90 days, work and study need the appropriate visa or permit.

About That Onward Ticket

Taiwan’s visa-exemption conditions include a confirmed return or onward ticket. Many travelers report never being asked for it at the border, but airlines can ask at check-in, and it is a formal condition of visa-free entry. Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting it altogether because there is no paper card on the plane.
  • Submitting too early and finding it outside the accepted window.
  • Typos in passport details, which can slow down your clearance.
  • Paying a third-party site for a free government form.
