Tacna to Arica Border Crossing: Peru to Chile Guide 2026
Tacna, in Peru’s far south, and Arica, in Chile’s far north, are about 60 km apart. The Santa Rosa (Peru) and Chacalluta (Chile) border complex between them is one of the busiest crossings in South America and the standard border run for people staying in either country.
Quick Facts
- Peru side: Santa Rosa complex, near Tacna
- Chile side: Chacalluta complex, near Arica
- Controls: integrated. Going into Peru, both countries process you at Santa Rosa; going into Chile, both process you at Chacalluta
- Colectivo fare: about PEN 15 to 20 per person
- Time: about 1.5 to 2 hours normally, much longer at peak times
Getting Across
From Tacna, go to the international bus terminal (Terminal Terrestre Internacional), next to the domestic one. Shared colectivo taxis leave when full and handle the paperwork with you at the border. Buses are slightly cheaper but slower. You pay a small terminal fee to leave the station. In Arica, colectivos arrive at the international terminal.
Wait Times
Lines can stretch to three to five hours on Peruvian and Chilean holidays, during Chile’s summer holidays, and around Peru’s Fiestas Patrias in late July. Colectivo and bus drivers have protested about the delays. Cross early in the morning on a weekday if you can.
Chile Food Rules
Chile bans most fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and plant products. Eat or discard them before the border and declare anything you are unsure about.
Peru And Chile Stay Rules
Peru: officers can give up to 183 days, but often give less. The 183 days is also a maximum per 365 days, so a border run cannot stretch your time beyond that.
Chile: most Western visitors get 90 days. A run to Tacna and back can get you a new entry, at the officer’s discretion.
Peru declared a state of emergency in its border districts around Tacna in April 2026, so expect more police checks than usual.
Bring Proof Of Onward Travel
Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one.
If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.
