Rumichaca Border Crossing: Ipiales to Tulcán 2026 Guide
The Rumichaca International Bridge links Ipiales in Colombia with Tulcán in Ecuador on the Pan-American Highway. Since December 2025, Ecuador has named it the only official land crossing with Colombia. It is the standard route between the two countries and a common border run for long-stay visitors in either.
Quick Facts
- Colombia side: about 3 km from Ipiales
- Ecuador side: about 7 km from Tulcán
- From Quito: about 5 hours by bus to Tulcán
- Altitude: around 2,700 meters
Before You Cross
Colombia: complete the Check-MIG form online before entering or leaving Colombia. See our Check-MIG guide. Most Western visitors get 90 days, extendable up to 180 days per calendar year.
Ecuador: carry a passport valid for at least six months. Ecuador’s military has stepped up security at the bridge, so expect checks.
Ecuador Entry
Most Western passports get 90 days visa-free in Ecuador, generally counted within a 12-month period. Carry a passport valid for at least six months. Ecuador tightened its border controls in December 2025 and named a single official crossing with each neighbor, so stick to the official post.
Crossing Step By Step
- Take a shared taxi or colectivo from Ipiales or Tulcán to the bridge
- Get your exit stamp at the immigration office of the country you are leaving
- Walk across the bridge, about five minutes
- Get your entry stamp on the other side and take a colectivo onward
Cross in daylight. While you are here, the Las Lajas Sanctuary near Ipiales and Tulcán’s topiary cemetery are both worth a stop.
Bring Proof Of Onward Travel
Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one. See whether Colombia asks for proof of onward travel.
If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.
