Nong Khai to Vientiane Border Crossing: 2026 Visa Run Guide

The First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge between Nong Khai and Vientiane is the easiest land border run out of Thailand. The Lao capital sits about 20 kilometers from the bridge, the process is routine, and you can be back in Thailand the same day or after a night in Vientiane.

This guide covers how the crossing works in 2026, what it costs, and the new Thai rules that decide whether a visa run here still makes sense for you.

Quick Facts

  • Thai side: Nong Khai, about 55 km north of Udon Thani airport
  • Lao side: Thanaleng, about 20 km from central Vientiane
  • Hours: 06:00 to 22:00
  • Lao visa: visa on arrival or eVisa
  • Time needed: a long day trip, or one night in Vientiane

Getting To Nong Khai

From Bangkok, take the overnight train to Nong Khai, a bus from Mo Chit, or a domestic flight to Udon Thani followed by a minivan or taxi to the border. From Udon Thani the drive takes around an hour.

There is also a short train shuttle from Nong Khai station across the bridge to Khamsavath (Thanaleng) station on the Lao side, which is handy if you arrive by rail.

Crossing Step By Step

  1. Get stamped out at Thai immigration at the bridge
  2. Take the shuttle bus across the bridge. Walking on the bridge is not allowed
  3. Fill in the arrival form and visa form on the Lao side, pay, and collect your visa and entry stamp
  4. Take a tuk-tuk, taxi or the city bus into Vientiane

To return, reverse the process. Thai immigration will stamp you back in on the visa exemption, if you still have a land entry left this year, or on a visa you arranged in advance.

Laos Visa On Arrival

Most visitors get a 30-day Lao visa on arrival at the Friendship Bridges. Budget roughly US$30 to US$42 depending on your passport (US citizens pay about US$35 to US$40), plus a small overtime fee early in the morning, late in the day or at weekends. Bring a passport photo and clean US dollars, since baht is accepted at a worse rate. The Lao eVisa is also valid at Friendship Bridges I, II and IV if you prefer to sort it out in advance.

Thailand’s Border Run Rules Since September 2026

Thailand changed the rules on September 15, 2026, and they matter more than any detail of the crossing itself:

  • 30 days visa-free for eligible nationalities, for tourism only
  • Two land-border entries per calendar year on the visa exemption. Nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore are exempt from the cap
  • Air entries are not capped, but officers screen repeat visa runners more closely
  • One 30-day extension at a Thai immigration office (form TM.7, 1,900 THB)

If you have already used your two land entries this year, this crossing will not get you back in visa-free. Fly in instead, or apply for a Tourist e-Visa or the DTV before you go. Our Thailand border run rules for 2026 covers every option.

Getting A Thai Visa In Vientiane

If your land entries are used up or you want a longer stay, Vientiane is still a good place to sort it out. Thailand’s Tourist e-Visa and the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) are applied for online, and many runners spend a few days in Vientiane while the application is processed before crossing back.

Bring Proof Of Onward Travel

Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one.

If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.
