Is the Mae Sai to Tachileik Border Open? 2026 Status

For years, Mae Sai to Tachileik was the classic visa run from Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. You walked over the bridge into Myanmar, paid a small fee, had lunch and walked back with a fresh Thai stamp. In 2026 that routine no longer works for most foreign tourists.

The Short Answer

Treat Mae Sai as effectively closed for foreign visa runners. Officially, Friendship Bridge 1 is listed as open from 06:30 to 18:30. In practice, Chiang Rai immigration recorded no foreign passport holders crossing in August 2026, and local reporting in September 2026 described it as not a normal tourist crossing. The bridge is mainly used by local border-pass holders.

Why It Changed

The conflict in Myanmar, security concerns in Tachileik and disruption on the Myanmar side have all reduced access for foreigners. Rules and practice can change with little notice, and a crossing that is open on paper can still refuse you on the day. The old day pass, which cost 500 THB or US$10, is not something to plan around now.

Best Alternatives From Northern Thailand

  • Chiang Khong to Huay Xai: the main land option now, into Laos, about two hours from Chiang Rai
  • Fly out and back: Chiang Mai has flights to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hanoi and other nearby cities. Air entries do not count toward Thailand’s land-entry cap
  • Apply for a visa: a Tourist e-Visa or the DTV avoids repeated runs altogether

Thailand’s Border Run Rules Since September 2026

Thailand changed the rules on September 15, 2026, and they matter more than any detail of the crossing itself:

  • 30 days visa-free for eligible nationalities, for tourism only
  • Two land-border entries per calendar year on the visa exemption. Nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore are exempt from the cap
  • Air entries are not capped, but officers screen repeat visa runners more closely
  • One 30-day extension at a Thai immigration office (form TM.7, 1,900 THB)

If you have already used your two land entries this year, this crossing will not get you back in visa-free. Fly in instead, or apply for a Tourist e-Visa or the DTV before you go. Our Thailand border run rules for 2026 covers every option.

Bring Proof Of Onward Travel

Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one.

If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.

FAQs

Is the Mae Sai bridge officially closed?

Not formally, but foreign tourists are not realistically crossing. Assume you will not be able to use it.

What about other Myanmar crossings?

Mae Sot to Myawaddy has also been heavily affected by the conflict. We do not recommend planning a visa run into Myanmar in 2026.

Will Mae Sai reopen to tourists?

Possibly, but there is no date. Check local news and your embassy’s advice before going.

The Bottom Line

Skip Mae Sai for now. Head to Chiang Khong, or fly out and back, and carry proof of onward travel for your return to Thailand.
