Johor Bahru to Singapore Border Crossing: 2026 Visa Run Guide

The crossing between Johor Bahru and Singapore is one of the busiest land borders in the world. For long-stay visitors in Malaysia, a trip to Singapore is the classic way to leave and come back with a fresh entry stamp.

Two Crossings

  • Johor-Singapore Causeway: from JB city center to Woodlands Checkpoint. Most buses and walkers use this one
  • Second Link (Tuas): from western Johor to Tuas Checkpoint. Usually less crowded, better by car

The RTS Link train between Bukit Chagar in JB and Woodlands North is due to open around the end of 2026 and should make the trip much faster when it does.

Getting Across

From JB Sentral, Causeway Link and SBS buses (such as CW1, 160 and 170) carry passengers across. You get off at each checkpoint to clear immigration, then board a later bus of the same service. KTM also runs the short Shuttle Tebrau train from JB Sentral to Woodlands.

Queues are worst on weekday mornings, Friday evenings and public holidays. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon are usually quickest.

Documents You Need

Does It Reset Your Malaysia Stay?

In most cases, yes. Re-entering Malaysia normally gives you a new visa-free period based on your nationality, often 90 days for Western passports. But it is at the officer’s discretion. Back-to-back runs with very little time outside Malaysia can lead to questions or a shorter stay. Staying a few days in Singapore and carrying proof of your next departure helps.

Bring Proof Of Onward Travel

Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one. See whether Malaysia asks for proof of onward travel.

If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.

FAQs

Can I walk across the Causeway?

You can walk short sections between buses and checkpoints, but most people use the buses or the shuttle train.

How long does the crossing take?

Anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the time of day.

Can I get a visa for Thailand in Singapore?

Thailand now handles most tourist visas online through its e-Visa site, so you do not need to visit an embassy.

The Bottom Line

JB to Singapore is the easiest way to leave and re-enter Malaysia. Submit both arrival cards, avoid rush hour, and do not make the run look like a habit.
