Huaquillas to Aguas Verdes Border Crossing: Ecuador to Peru 2026
Huaquillas, in Ecuador’s El Oro province, faces Aguas Verdes in Peru’s Tumbes region. Ecuador has named the binational CEBAF complex at Huaquillas the only authorized land crossing with Peru. It is the route between Guayaquil or Cuenca and Peru’s north coast beaches at Máncora.
Quick Facts
- Ecuador side: Huaquillas, El Oro
- Peru side: Aguas Verdes, about 10 km from Tumbes
- Controls: integrated at the CEBAF, so you exit one country and enter the other in the same building
- Time: about 45 to 90 minutes normally, longer at peak times
Security Situation
The border towns have a long reputation for scams and petty crime, and security has worsened recently. In September 2026, Ecuador restricted the crossing for five hours a day for about two weeks because of insecurity. Check the current status before you travel, cross in daylight, and avoid lingering in the border towns.
Getting There
The safest option is an international bus from Guayaquil or Cuenca to Tumbes, Máncora or Piura, which stops at the CEBAF while everyone clears immigration. Avoid taking local transport between the two towns on your own.
Ecuador Entry
Most Western passports get 90 days visa-free in Ecuador, generally counted within a 12-month period. Carry a passport valid for at least six months. Ecuador tightened its border controls in December 2025 and named a single official crossing with each neighbor, so stick to the official post.
Peru Entry
Peru can grant up to 183 days, which is also the maximum per 365 days. Officers often give less, so ask for what you need and carry proof of onward travel.
Bring Proof Of Onward Travel
Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one.
If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.
