Encarnación to Posadas Border Crossing: Argentina to Paraguay 2026
The San Roque González de Santa Cruz Bridge over the Paraná River links Posadas, in Argentina’s Misiones province, with Encarnación in Paraguay. It is the busiest crossing between the two countries, and the international train across it is one of the best-value border runs in South America.
Quick Facts
- Argentina side: Posadas, Misiones
- Paraguay side: Encarnación, Itapúa
- Train: crosses the bridge in about eight to ten minutes, roughly every 30 minutes
- Controls: a single, joint border control has been in operation since 2025
Take The Train
Car traffic on the bridge is often chaotic, with long queues in 2026. The international train avoids all of that. Immigration is handled at the departure station, then the train runs straight across. It is cheap, fast and comfortable. More than 400,000 people used it by mid-2026.
The Posadas station sits next to the bridge, about 30 minutes’ walk from the center. Encarnación’s station is on the southern edge of town.
By Bus
Buses run between Posadas’ Terminal Quaranta and Encarnación’s bus terminal from roughly 06:00 to 22:00. Expect delays on the bridge at busy times.
Paraguay Entry
Paraguay waives the visa for US citizens for up to 90 days until August 13, 2027. Most European passports also get 90 days visa-free.
Argentina’s Tourist Stay And Visa Runs
Most Western visitors get up to 90 days in Argentina on arrival. You can apply once for a 90-day extension at a Dirección Nacional de Migraciones office, but most long-stay visitors cross into Uruguay or Chile and come back instead. That still works, but it is not a right. Under Decree 366/2025, border officers can refuse entry if they have good reason to believe a “tourist” is really living or working in Argentina, and they can give fewer than 90 days. Since mid-2025, visitors without permanent residency may also be asked for health insurance covering their stay.
Bring Proof Of Onward Travel
Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one.
If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.
