Do You Need An Onward Ticket For The UK? 2026 Rules

Planning a trip to the UK on a one-way ticket? This guide explains whether you need proof of onward travel, who actually checks it, and what else you need to enter in 2026.

The Short Answer

Not usually as a formal rule, but UK Border Force can ask how and when you will leave. A return or onward booking makes that conversation easy.

  • Visa: Visa-free for US, EU, Canadian, Australian and many other passports, but an ETA is required
  • Length of stay: Up to 6 months per visit as a standard visitor
  • Before you travel: UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), enforced since February 25, 2026

Who Checks: The Airline Or Immigration?

The airline checks your ETA before you board, by air, rail or ferry. On arrival, many visitors use the ePassport gates, but an officer can still question you about the purpose and length of your stay, especially if you have visited a lot recently.

Airlines check because they can be fined, and must fly you back at their own cost, if you are refused entry. That is why the check-in desk is often stricter than the border.

Entry Rules For The UK In 2026

Since February 25, 2026, visa-free visitors must hold an approved ETA before travelling. It costs £20, is valid for two years or until your passport expires, and allows multiple visits of up to six months each. Apply only through the official UK ETA app or GOV.UK. Irish citizens do not need one, and dual British citizens must travel on their British passport.

What Counts As Proof Of Onward Travel?

Any confirmed booking that shows you leaving the UK within your permitted stay, to a country you are allowed to enter. Common options are:

  • A return flight home
  • A flight to another country
  • A bus, train or ferry ticket out of the country, where accepted
  • A verifiable flight reservation with a booking reference (PNR)

If you are asked, a flight home or to Europe is ideal. Eurostar and ferry tickets also count. See our guide to verifiable reservations versus dummy tickets for what airlines can check.

If You Do Not Want To Buy A Ticket Yet

Many travelers do not know their next stop. Instead of buying a full fare you might not use, you can get an onward flight reservation from Fast Onward Tickets in minutes and show it at check-in and at the border. Our complete guide to proof of onward travel covers every option.
