Do You Need An Onward Ticket For South Korea? 2026 Rules
Planning a trip to South Korea on a one-way ticket? This guide explains whether you need proof of onward travel, who actually checks it, and what else you need to enter in 2026.
The Short Answer
Often, yes. Korean immigration can ask for a return or onward ticket, accommodation details and funds, and airlines may check one-way passengers.
- Visa: Visa-free for US, UK, EU, Canadian, Australian and many other passports
- Length of stay: Up to 90 days for most visa-waiver visitors
- Before you travel: e-Arrival Card. The K-ETA is waived for 67 countries until December 31, 2026
Who Checks: The Airline Or Immigration?
Both can ask. Airlines check whether you hold a K-ETA or qualify for the exemption, and officers at Incheon may ask about your return plans.
Airlines check because they can be fined, and must fly you back at their own cost, if you are refused entry. That is why the check-in desk is often stricter than the border.
Entry Rules For South Korea In 2026
South Korea has extended its temporary K-ETA exemption for nationals of 67 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and many EU states, until December 31, 2026. During the exemption you must complete the free e-Arrival Card instead. The exemption has been renewed several times, but if your trip is in 2027, check whether the K-ETA is required again.
What Counts As Proof Of Onward Travel?
Any confirmed booking that shows you leaving South Korea within your permitted stay, to a country you are allowed to enter. Common options are:
- A return flight home
- A flight to another country
- A bus, train or ferry ticket out of the country, where accepted
- A verifiable flight reservation with a booking reference (PNR)
Flights to Japan, Taiwan or back home all count. Ferry tickets to Japan also count. See our guide to verifiable reservations versus dummy tickets for what airlines can check.
If You Do Not Want To Buy A Ticket Yet
Many travelers do not know their next stop. Instead of buying a full fare you might not use, you can get an onward flight reservation from Fast Onward Tickets in minutes and show it at check-in and at the border. Our complete guide to proof of onward travel covers every option.
