Do You Need An Onward Ticket For Nicaragua? 2026 Rules
Planning a trip to Nicaragua on a one-way ticket? This guide explains whether you need proof of onward travel, who actually checks it, and what else you need to enter in 2026.
The Short Answer
It can be requested. Nicaragua’s immigration and airlines can ask for a return or onward ticket, and entry is at the government’s discretion.
- Visa: Visa-free for about 67 nationalities, including the US, Canada, the UK and the EU. Since February 2026, many other nationalities need an advance “consulted visa”
- Length of stay: Up to 90 days, shared with Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras (CA-4)
- Before you travel: US$10 tourist card on arrival (cash)
Who Checks: The Airline Or Immigration?
Airlines check that you are eligible to enter. Nicaraguan immigration has refused entry to some foreigners without explanation, so carry clear travel plans and onward proof.
Airlines check because they can be fined, and must fly you back at their own cost, if you are refused entry. That is why the check-in desk is often stricter than the border.
Entry Rules For Nicaragua In 2026
Visitors from exempt countries pay a US$10 tourist card on arrival, in cash. Since February 16, 2026, around 128 nationalities need a consulted visa in advance. The US State Department advises US citizens to reconsider travel because of the risk of arbitrary detention.
What Counts As Proof Of Onward Travel?
Any confirmed booking that shows you leaving Nicaragua within your permitted stay, to a country you are allowed to enter. Common options are:
- A return flight home
- A flight to another country
- A bus, train or ferry ticket out of the country, where accepted
- A verifiable flight reservation with a booking reference (PNR)
A bus ticket to Costa Rica or Honduras, or a flight out of the region. See our guide to verifiable reservations versus dummy tickets for what airlines can check.
If You Do Not Want To Buy A Ticket Yet
Many travelers do not know their next stop. Instead of buying a full fare you might not use, you can get an onward flight reservation from Fast Onward Tickets in minutes and show it at check-in and at the border. Our complete guide to proof of onward travel covers every option.
