Do You Need An Onward Ticket For New Zealand? 2026 Rules

Planning a trip to New Zealand on a one-way ticket? This guide explains whether you need proof of onward travel, who actually checks it, and what else you need to enter in 2026.

The Short Answer

Yes. New Zealand requires visitors to hold a ticket out of the country to a place they have the right to enter, and airlines check this before you board.

  • Visa: Visa waiver for US, UK, EU, Canadian and many other passports, but you need an NZeTA before you fly
  • Length of stay: Up to 3 months per visit for most visa-waiver nationals (UK citizens can get up to 6 months)
  • Before you travel: NZeTA plus the International Visitor Levy (IVL), and a free arrival declaration

Who Checks: The Airline Or Immigration?

Both. Airlines will not board you without an approved NZeTA, and they check for onward travel because New Zealand is strict about it. At the border, officers can ask to see your onward ticket and proof of funds.

Airlines check because they can be fined, and must fly you back at their own cost, if you are refused entry. That is why the check-in desk is often stricter than the border.

Entry Rules For New Zealand In 2026

The NZeTA costs NZ$17 in the official app or NZ$23 on the website. On top of that you pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL), which rose to NZ$100 in October 2024. Both are paid together. The NZeTA is valid for two years.

Visitors may also need to show funds of around NZ$1,000 per month of stay, or NZ$400 per month if accommodation is prepaid. Australian citizens do not need an NZeTA.

What Counts As Proof Of Onward Travel?

Any confirmed booking that shows you leaving New Zealand within your permitted stay, to a country you are allowed to enter. Common options are:

  • A return flight home
  • A flight to another country
  • A bus, train or ferry ticket out of the country, where accepted
  • A verifiable flight reservation with a booking reference (PNR)

Your onward ticket must take you to a country you are allowed to enter. If that country also requires an onward ticket, you may need to show that too. See our guide to verifiable reservations versus dummy tickets for what airlines can check.

If You Do Not Want To Buy A Ticket Yet

Many travelers do not know their next stop. Instead of buying a full fare you might not use, you can get an onward flight reservation from Fast Onward Tickets in minutes and show it at check-in and at the border. Our complete guide to proof of onward travel covers every option.
