Benque Viejo to Melchor de Mencos Border Crossing: 2026 Guide

Benque Viejo del Carmen in Belize faces Melchor de Mencos in Guatemala across the Mopan River. It is the only land crossing between the two countries, and the route between San Ignacio and Flores, the base for Tikal.

Quick Facts

  • Belize side: Benque Viejo del Carmen, about 15 km from San Ignacio. Belize’s Border Management Agency lists the western border as open 24 hours
  • Guatemala side: Melchor de Mencos, Petén. Customs runs 06:00 to 21:00
  • Belize exit fee: BZ$40 (about US$20)
  • Guatemala exit fee: none in the official tariff

Getting There

From San Ignacio, take a bus or shared taxi to Benque Viejo, then a taxi to the border. From Flores, colectivos leave the Santa Elena terminal for Melchor de Mencos every 15 to 30 minutes from early morning, costing about Q40 and taking around two hours. Shuttles from Belize City to Flores or Tikal change vehicles at the border.

Crossing Step By Step

  1. Pay the departure fees and get stamped out of Belize
  2. Walk across the bridge to Guatemalan immigration, about five minutes
  3. Get your entry stamp. There is no official entry fee
  4. Take a colectivo or shuttle on to Flores or Tikal

Travelers sometimes report being asked for small unofficial payments on the Guatemalan side. If you are asked for money, ask for an official receipt.

Safety Note

Canada advises against non-essential travel at the Melchor de Mencos crossing. Cross in daylight, use established shuttles or colectivos, and check your own government’s current advice.

The CA-4 Rule For Guatemala

Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua share one 90-day tourist allowance under the CA-4 agreement. Moving between those four countries does not reset the clock. To get a fresh 90 days you need to leave the CA-4 area entirely, which in practice means Mexico, Belize or Costa Rica. Officers decide how many days to give you on re-entry, and frequent runs can lead to fewer.

Belize Stay

Most visitors get 30 days in Belize, extendable at immigration offices for a fee. Belize charges its BZ$40 departure fee every time you leave by land.

Bring Proof Of Onward Travel

Border officers on a visa run are deciding one thing: will you leave again on time? A confirmed onward or return booking is the quickest way to answer that. It matters most when you are re-entering a country you only just left, and on the flight leg if your run involves one.

If you do not want to commit to a real ticket yet, Fast Onward Tickets issues an onward flight reservation in minutes. See our complete guide to proof of onward travel for what officers and airlines accept.

FAQs

Can I visit Tikal as a day trip from Belize?

Yes, shuttles and tours do it daily, though it is a long day.

Does crossing into Belize reset my Guatemala days?

Leaving the CA-4 area means you can be given a new allowance when you return, at the officer’s discretion.

Where can I buy Tikal tickets?

Paper tickets are now sold at Bantrab bank branches, and Melchor de Mencos is one of the few places that sells them. Check current rules before you go.

The Bottom Line

Melchor de Mencos is a simple crossing with one fixed cost: Belize’s exit fee. Go in daylight, keep your receipts, and plan your CA-4 days carefully.
